First recorded from New Ireland as Epinephelus microdon by Kailola (1987b: 230); previously misidentified from Drei Inseln Harbour, New Hanover, and Ningin Island, New Ireland as Epinephelus damelii (non Günther, 1876) by Munro (1958 : 161). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 , and collected by Barry C. Russell on 7, 14 and 21 June 2014 . Distribution and habitat. New Ireland : 1, 2, 3.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa east to Marshall, Line and Tuamotu islands, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia including Lord Howe Island. Found in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 1–46 m depth. Marine.
