New synonymy
. I have examined a specimen from the MNHN identified as
H. cylindricus
. This specimen clearly is an example of
I. marginella
. Moreover, the illustration of an antenna of
H. cylindricus
, associated with Germar’ s description (Germar 1912: 720) is perfectly compatible with the form of the antenna of
I. marginella
.
Diagnosis.
The extent of narrowness of the vertex (
Fig. 64
) will distinguish the members of this species from congeners.
Description. Size
: Length
7.8 mm
; width 3.0 mm.
Form
(
Fig. 155
): Oblong subovoid.
Integumental color
(
Fig. 107
): Cranium mostly yellow, infuscated behind eye; pronotum yellow, faintly infuscated anteromedially; elytra mostly dark brown, with yellow line along epipleural and sutural margins; femora yellow, tibiae and tarsi brown.
Head
: HW/PW 1.0; frons not indented; EW/VW 5.0; antenna as in
Fig. 165
, funicle not compressed.
Thorax
: Pronotum, PL/PW 1.0; elytra subovoid, EL/PL 4.5; EL/EW 2.3; anterior margin of protibia with 12 spines.
Male genitalia
: Aedeagus as in
Fig. 188
.
Male mesodermal internal reproductive organs
(
Fig. 116
): Testes comprised of 22 follicles.
Female mesodermal internal reproductive organs
: As in
Fig. 117
.
Variation.
Size: length 5.0–
7.9 mm
; width
1.2– 2.4 mm
. There is variation in the degree to which the eyes approximate each other in dorsal view. Specimens from the more northern part of the species’ range, for example
Honduras
, are a little wider between the eyes than those from South America. Also, there is considerable variation in the expression of the broad brown vitta at the middle of the pronotal disc and in the expression of the pale line on the elytral suture. In a few specimens, especially those from
Mexico
, the pale line along the epipleural and sutural margins coalesce at the elytral apex.
Natural History.
Specimens have been captured throughout the year at elevations ranging from
100 to 1,615 m
. Some were taken from a fallen oak log, others in a Malaise trap in a montane tropical rainforest. Specimens were also collected on a felled trunk of
Manilkara
.
Distribution.
The known range of this species extends from
Mexico
to
Brazil
(
Map 6
).
