Distribution: Bolivia, Argentina, SE Brazil, Uruguay.

Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Included in ruber by Cabrera (1958), but see LaVal (1973 a). Reviewed in part by López-González et al. (2001). Apparently closely related to nigricans; see Ruedi and Mayer (2001).
