Type Locality: Panama, Darien, Río Puero, Tacarcuna Village.

Vernacular Names: Riparian Myotis.

Distribution: Honduras south to Uruguay, E Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia; Trinidad.

Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Originally described as a subspecies of simus . Reviewed in part by López-González et al. (2001). LaVal (1973 a) suggested that guaycuru may be the oldest name for this species, but López-González et al. (2001) have shown guaycuru to be a junior synonym of simus . Apparently closely related to ruber; see Ruedi and Mayer (2001).
