Type Locality: India, Assam, Khasi Hills, Cherrapunji.

Vernacular Names: Harlequin Bat.

Distribution: NE India (including Sikkim), Burma, S China, Thailand, Vietnam.

Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (nt) as S. ornatus; Data Deficient as S. emarginatus .

Discussion: Includes emarginatus; see Corbet and Hill (1992). Included in Nycticeius by Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951); but see Hill (1974 c). Reviewed by Bates and Harrison (1997); also see Sinha (1999) and Hendrichsen et al. (2001 b).
