Distribution: Extant populations limited to Armenia and W Iran.
Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Endangered.
Discussion: The nominate subspecies is known only from the Pliocene and is presumably extinct. The living subspecies, araxenus, was formerly included in nattereri; see Horácek and Hanák (1984). Reviewed by Horácek et al. (2000).
