Type Locality: Indonesia, Prov. of Papua (= Irian Jaya), Vogelkop, Manokwari Div., Arfak Mtns.

Vernacular Names: Western Long-beaked Echidna.

Synonyms: Zaglossus goodfellowi (Thomas 1907); Zaglossus gularis W. Rothschild 1922; Zaglossus nigro-aculeatus (W. Rothschild 1892); Zaglossus pallidus W. Rothschild 1922; Zaglossus tridactyla (Dubois 1882); Zaglossus villosissima (Dubois 1884) .

Distribution: Western New Guinea, west of Paniai Lakes; Salawati Isl (Indonesia).

Conservation: CITES - Appendix II; IUCN – Endangered.
