Onorelucanus pulverosus (Westwood, 1875), new combination
Scortizus pulverosus Westwood 1875: 243 (original description); Maes 1992: 54; Krajcik 2001: 27 (catalog). Scortizus ismaeli Fukinuki 2004: 32, new synonymy .
It has long been apparent that this species was misplaced in Scortizus . Characters that place this species in Onorelucanus include the simple male genitalic capsule; convex, unarmed pronotum; and toothed mesotibiae and metatibiae in both sexes. The name S. ismaeli Fukinuki, represents a mandibular variant from the same locality as O. pulverosus . We have examined intermediate forms, and thus the name is reduced to synonymy with O. pulverosus . This situation exemplifies the undesirability of naming new species based on a single specimen and without a detailed study of the genus as a whole, or at the very least, some form of peer review.
