Heteropodagrion Selys, 1885

A poorly known genus; with five species recorded for Ecuador; the group is in need of further study. See Garrison & von Ellenrieder (2005), Pérez-Gutiérrez & Montes-Fontalvo (2011c) and Daigle (2014) for identification. Adults perch for most of the day in dark shade with wings together (Fig. 45), being difficult to spot. Nymphs live in sheet flow on nearly vertical rocks at the edges of small, forested, mountainous streams (Tennessen 2010).

Note: Garrison et al. (2010) suggested that H. superbum may be a junior synonym of H. sanguinipes . We elect to retain it here as a valid species until further studies warrant otherwise.

Heteropodagrion varipes Daigle, 2014 . MS, Morona: Daigle (2014 — Holotype ♂, Macas 20.3 km W on Gua- mote Rd, 0.6 km W on Río Albanico, two rocky waterfall streams (-2.2475, -78.2067, 1536m), 18 ix 05, leg. JJD [FSCA]). Note: All known specimens were collected along the road between Macas and Guamote at small waterfalls.
