Neoneura Selys, 1869

Neoneura damselflies are slightly stockier than most others in the subfamily. Four species have been recorded for Ecuador; adults are often predominantly red and black (Fig. 35a), although one species is green and yellow with black stripes (Fig. 35b). Another species that is mostly blue and red has not been found in Ecuador but most likely occurs there. The genus was revised by Garrison (1999), although one species was described since (see Wasscher & Van’T Bosch 2013). Most species inhabit slow to moderate streams and rivers in forest, hovering close to the water surface; they can be extremely wary of movement.

Note: All prior records for N. bilinearis from Ecuador should be this species. The listing by Wasscher & Van’t Bosch (2013) “E of Babahoyo, pers. comm. JTJ” is based on the locality data herein. The Ecuador record is the only Pacific slope record based on the locality map of Wasscher and Van’t Bosch (2013). This widespread species should be found on the east slope also.
