Mythicomyia dominicana Evenhuis, 2002

Mythicomyia dominicana Evenhuis, 2002c: 8 .

Mythicomyia dominica: Evenhuis, 2002c: 2 . Incorrect original spelling of Mythicomyia dominicana .

Remarks. This species was originally proposed in Evenhuis (2002c) with two original spellings ( Mythicomyia dominicana (page 8) and Mythicomyia dominica (page 2). By action of First Reviser I here deem Mythicomyia dominicana to be the correct original spelling.

Riga toni Evenhuis, new genus, new species (Figs. 9, 12, 18)

Type species: Riga toni Evenhuis, n. sp. by present designation.

Type. Holotype female from the Ukraine: exact locality unknown, N. 851 in a subtrapezoidal piece of amber without syninclusions and measuring 8 x 16 x 9 mm in circumference by 5–6 mm thick. Rovno amber; Late Eocene. Holotype in SIZK.

Diagnosis. This new genus and species is most similar to the extant Reissa roni Evenhuis & Báez and species of Pieza Evenhuis in having a closed and triangularly-shaped first submarginal cell and the antennal style placed subapically on the second flagellomere; and is similar to Reissa in the additional shared wing characters of a complete costal vein and the absence of vein A1. It can be easily separated from both genera by the conspicuously well developed mesonotum (as high as long) giving it a hunchbacked appearance as in Platypygus Loew and Mythicomyia Coquillett (the mesonotum in Reissa and Pieza is flattened dorsally) and by the almost holoptic eyes below the antenna (separated by the width of 2–3 ommatidia) (the eyes distinctly holoptic in Reissa and Pieza and separated by the width of 10 or more ommatidia). Additionally, Riga has a longer second antennal flagellomere being roughly 3 x its width and 1/2 the length of the first flagellomere (Fig. 9) (this flagellomere shorter and roughly 1/4–1/3 the length of the first flagellomere in Reissa and Pieza . It can further be separated from Reissa by the shorter proboscis (proboscis length subequal to head height in Reissa; proboscis length variable in Pieza).

The species description below can serve to give further details of the genus.

Etymology. The genus name is named in honor of the asteroid 1796 Riga .

Description. Female (Fig. 18). Length: 1.9 mm. Head. Occiput, vertex, and mentum black; eyes almost holoptic, separated below antennae by width of 3 ommatidia; front and face brown; antennae dark brown; scape minute; pedicel cylindrical, slightly longer than wide; first flagellomere (Fig. 9) cylindrical-lanceolate, length about 1.5 x greatest width; second flagellomere cylindrical, rounded apically, about 1/2 length of first flagellomere; sensillum placed subapically; proboscis brown, length ca. 1/2 head height; palpus not evident.

Thorax. Mesonotum, scutellum, and pleura dark brown, broadly yellowish only in prescutellar area; legs dark brown; halter stem and knob dark brown.

Wing (Fig. 12). Hyaline; veins brown; costa complete; vein Sc incomplete, ending about at level of origin of Rs; vein R2+3 originates at basal 1/3 of Rs and ends in R1 forming a triangular submarginal cell; vein R4+5 straight to wing margin, ending in costa beyond level of end of vein M2; vein M1 straight toward wing margin; vein M2 fairly straight to wing margin; vein A1 absent, present only as a fold.

Abdomen. Distended; brown, with scattered short hairs. Genitalia not visible.

Etymology. The specific epithet is named for Anthony “Tony” Shelley in honor of his many contributions to dipterology.
