Type Locality: Algoa Bay, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

Vernacular Names: Southern Right Whale.

Synonyms: Eubalaena antarctica (Lesson 1828); Eubalaena antipodarum (Gray 1843); Eubalaena temminckii (Gray 1864) .

Distribution: Southern hemisphere: Antarctic to temperate waters; occasionally along the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered (included with E. glacialis); IUCN – Lower Risk (cd).

Discussion: Reviewed by Cummings (1985 b). Included in glacialis by some recent authors.
