Geocapromys thoracatus (True 1888)

Type Locality: "Little Swan Island, one of the two small islands lying at the entrance of the Gulf of Honduras ".

Vernacular Names: Swan Island Hutia.

Distribution: Little Swan Isl.

Conservation: IUCN – Extinct; Clough (1976) stated that thoracatus became extinct in 1950s, possibly as a result of introduced cats on the island.

Discussion: Sometimes included as a subspecies of G. brownii; see Mohr (1939:77), Hall (1981:866), and Varona (1974:67). Morgan (1985) reconfirmed its status as a distinct species. Reviewed by Morgan (1989 a, Mammalian Species No. 341).
