Genus Metagonia Kolbe, 1899

Apogonia (Metagonia) Kolbe, 1899a: 42; Ritsema, 1904b: 114 (catalogue); Dalla Torre, 1912: 136 (catalogue)

Metagonia: Moser, 1918a (imprint 1917): 242; Burgeon, 1945: 2 (key), 17

Type species: Apogonia mediocris Kolbe, 1899; here designated.

Distribution: Ethiopian region.

Remark: Originally described as a subgenus of the genus Apogonia, it was subsequently upgraded to the genus rank by Moser (1918). Kolbe (1899a) created a new subgenus Metagonia for 4 species: A. platypyge, A. platypus, A. pusilla and A. mediocris, but he did not fix its type species. When creating the subgenus Metagonia, Kolbe knew both sexes only in A. mediocris . Because Metagonia differs from other members of the Old World Diplotaxini partially in the considerable sexual dimorphism (shape of pygidium), A. mediocris is designated here as the type species of the subgenus Metagonia .
