An Afrotropical species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla: Bovidae and Suidae, but they have also been taken from Mammalia (several orders). Nymphs alone have been collected from Rodentia: Muridae; larvae alone have been recovered from Lagomorpha: Leporidae . Rhipicephalus planus is a rare parasite of humans.
