An Afrotropical species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla: Bovidae, while larvae and nymphs are commonly recovered from Lagomorpha: Leporidae, and Macroscelidea: Macroscelididae . All parasitic stages have been collected from Lagomorpha: Leporidae; adults alone have been found on Artiodactyla: Bovidae and Suidae, Carnivora: Canidae and Felidae, and Perissodactyla: Equidae; nymphs and larvae have been taken from Macroscelidea: Macroscelididae, and larvae alone from Galliformes: Phasianidae (Guglielmone et al. 2014, Horak et al. 2018). There are no records of Rhipicephalus exophthalmos causing human parasitism.
