A Neotropical species whose adults have usually been found on Perissodactyla: Tapiridae, but they have also been collected from Mammalia (several orders); nymphs have been collected from Artiodactyla: Tayassuidae, Carnivora: Procyonidae, Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae, Perissodactyla: Tapiridae, and Rodentia: Cuniculidae . Amblyomma tapirellum is a sporadic parasite of humans.

Note: Voltzit (2007) states that the male and female of Amblyomma tapirellum each have two spurs on coxae II and III, but in the original description of Dunn (1933) only one spur is stated to be present on those coxae, and the corresponding figure of the female in Dunn (1933) shows no obvious spurs on coxae II and III. Bermúdez et al. (2018) describe coxae II and III of the male and female of Amblyomma tapirellum as having one spur each, but this characteristic is not clearly shown in the accompanying figures. Reexamination of the of type material of Amblyomma tapirellum is needed in order to better define this tick.
