Forsstroemia producta (Hornsch.) Paris

SPECIMEN EXAMINED. — Madagascar. Fianarantsoa: Andringitra, Ramiova Forest E of village of Antanafotsy, 30 km S of Ambalavao; 22°06’S, 46°53’E; 3.XI.1972; Crosby & Crosby 7358 (MO[MO-2191530]!, TAN).

NOTES

Forsstroemia producta is widespread in southeast Africa and Stark (1987) reported it from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. In addition, Müller (1995) reported it from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its presence in Madagascar is not surprising

considering that it also occurs in North and South America, Australia, and Asia. The single Malagasy specimen we have seen was previously determined as Cryphaea F.Weber and then Braunia Bruch & Schimp. Both genera are perhaps superficially similar but the collection in question possesses sporophytes, the form of which clearly rule out either of those possibilities.
