Nomenclature. This species was erroneously ascribed to Ehrenberg by Matis (1973) and Tirjaková (1988, 1992b), and to Schewiakoff (1896) by Matis (1988) and Matis & Tirjaková (1992).
Main morphological characters (according to Foissner et al. 1995). Size 50–100 × 10–25 µm in vivo. Body lanceolate with usually broadly rounded posterior body end, left side distinctly vaulted carrying a median rib. Two macronuclear nodules with a single micronucleus in between. Contractile vacuole distinctly subterminal. Extrusomes rod-like and slightly curved, about 5–7 µm long, attached along whole length of oral bulge and to posterior body end. Somatic ciliary pattern Litonotus -like; 4–7 right and about 4 left kineties.
Distribution. Litonotus lamella was found among coastal water plants of a pond in Tomky during August (Matis 1973); in organic mud from activated sludge plants in Bratislava (Matis 1988); in agricultural soil near the town of Piešťany (Tirjaková 1988); in the backwaters of the Danube River in Čičov (Matis & Tirjaková 1992); in the riverside zone of the Danube River (Tirjaková 1992a); in a Sphagnum pond near Rojkov in the Veľká Fatra Mts (Tirjaková 1992b); in the periphyton and benthos of the Turiec River (Tirjaková 1993); in the benthos of the Karlova Ves (Bratislava) Branch of the Danube River (Szentivány & Tirjaková 1994); in the benthos of the Hron River and its tributaries (Tirjaková 1998); in the benthos from various streams in the High Tatra Mts (Tirjaková 2001); in the pelagial of the Morava River (Baláži & Matis 2002a); in the benthos from various localities in the Gidra River (Tirjaková 2003a); in the benthos from the Stupavský potok brook (Tirjaková 2003b); in the spring area of the Hron River (Tirjaková 2006); in the benthos and plankton of a hypertrophic shallow water reservoir near the town of Modra (Tirjaková 2010); in the sediment from the littoral zone of the upper Váh River near the villages of Bystrá and Stankovany (Tirjaková & Vďačný 2013a).
