Ornithogalum canadense Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 308. 1753.
"Habitat in Africa." RCN: 2408.
Replaced synonym of: Albuca major L. (1762), nom. illeg.
Lectotype ( Müller-Doblies in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 16. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 140.5 (S) .
Current name: Albuca canadensis (L.) F.M. Leight. ( Liliaceae / Hyacinthaceae).
Note: Stearn (in Ann. Mus. Goulandris 6: 158, f. 10. 1983) indicated as "suggested lectotype " for Ornithogalum canadense L. (the basis of A. major) a Cornut plate, but as he also added "but Linn. Herb. 426.1...possible", this cannot be accepted as an unequivocal choice of type. The name was formally typified by U. Müller-Doblies in 1993 but subsequently (see Feddes Repert. 105: 367. 1994; 117: 116. 2006) informally rejected as a nomen confusum (as the basionym of Albuca canadensis) in favour of A. maxima Burm. f. (1768). However, no formal proposal for the rejection of the name appears to have been made.
