Halpern, 1970c:2; McKnight, 1973:180; Downey in Clark & Downey, 1992: 258; H.E.S. Clark and McKnight, 2001: 12 (key),100; Mah 2011: 39.
Comments. This genus includes seven species which are known from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, primarily at shelf to bathyal depths (approximately 120–2150 m). Halpern (1970c) distinguished Pillsburiaster based on the presence of large, deciduous granules present on the abactinal surface, but species are poorly understood.
