Nycteria Swinderen, 1822: 86 .

TYPE SPECIES: Musca noctiluca Linnaeus, 1758, by monotypy .

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Pipiza Fallén, 1810, n. syn.

FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE .

REMARKS: Swinderen’s descriptive word for the genus-group name “Nachtvlieger” [= night flyer] is construed as a behavioral character used to differentiate, thus making the generic name available. Additionally, the inclusion of a single available specific name ( noctiluca) [= Musca noctiluca Linnaeus, 1758] makes the genus-group name available by including a specific name that can be unambiguously assigned to a nominal species-group taxon (ICZN Code Art. 12.2.5). Musca noctiluca Linnaeus, 1758 is the type species of the syrphid genus Pipiza Fallén, 1810 [teste Mutin (2002: 2)], thus I treat Nycteria Swinderen, 1822 as a junior synonym of Pipiza Fallén, n. syn.
