Type species. Cicada hilaris Germar 1834: 69 . (Australia?)

Diagnosis. Head about as wide as mesonotum, eyes scarcely project beyond pronotum anterior angle, fore wing radial crossvein oriented vertically to radius anterior 2 and radius posterior veins, radiomedial crossvein obliquely oriented, males possessing large semicircular opercula, and triangular or small, curved timbal covers.

Distribution. Species of the genus range across the Neotropical region with records from Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the Virgin Islands (Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2011a; 2013; 2014; 2018; 2019a; 2020b, d; Sanborn & Maes 2012; Maes et al. 2012; Sanborn & Heath 2014).
