Centris (Centris) smithii Cresson, 1879

Centris smithii Cresson, 1879 . 229 (nom. nov. for C. apicalis Smith, 1874).

Centris apicalis Smith, 1874 . 367 (junior secondary homonym of Anthophora versicolor var. apicalis Guérin-Mén- eville, 1844).

Type data: Moure et al. (2007) mentioned that the description of this species was based on a single female specimen, but according to the original description, Smith (1874) used at least a couple of each sex collected in “St Bartholomew” (= Saint Barthélemy), Lesser Antilles. A female specimen of the type series housed at NHMUK was cited by Moure (1960) as the type. According to ICZN Article number 74.6 this mention can be treated as a valid lectotype designation. The specimen has the following data label: Type H. T. [redrimmed circular label, printed]\ St Bartholomew [circular label, handwritten]\ B.M. TYPE HYM. [printed] 17b 1173 [handwritten]\ Centris apicalis Smith. Type [handwritten]. The lectotype is in good condition and is coded NHMUK 010812627 in the NHMUK data portal. The current condition and depository of the male paralectotype (s) is currently unknown.

Type locality: Lesser Antilles: Saint Barthélemy (“St Bartholomew”) .

Comments: The type locality cannot be further narrowed down than to Saint Barthélemy. This species was correctly interpreted by Starr & Vélez (2009), Meurgey et al. (2014) and Meurgey (2016).
