Candelariella viae-lacteae is characterized by its grey thallus, uniformly composed of sphaerical granules (Thor and Wirth 1990). Previous collections of this species from Switzerland have turned out to belong to other species, mostly Candelariella antennaria, another species with a grey thallus. However, a recent find of Candelariella viae-lacteae was made on mosses on a stem base of Fraxinus excelsior .
