Type Locality: " Mexico "; restricted by Nelson (1909:122) to southern end of Mexican Tableland.

Vernacular Names: White-sided Jackrabbit.

Distribution: C Oaxaca (Mexico) north discontinuously to SW New Mexico (USA).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: Subgenus Proeulagus (Gureev, 1964), or Macrotolagus (Averianov, 1998). Includes gaillardi and mexicanus; see Anderson and Gaunt (1962) and Hall (1981:328-330); but see also Gureev (1964:192, 195). Range allopatric with L. alleni, to which it is probably related.
