Type data: This species was described based on an undetermined number of females collected in Brazil. There was found a single female of this species in OUMNH with original Lepeletier’s labels being here designated as the lectotype. The specimen has the following data label: [circular label with red margin] Type [printed]\ Centris ferruginea Lepel. ♀ Brasilia [handwritten] (OUMNH). According to the original description, the lectotype belonged to Dejean’s collection. Unfortunately, it is strongly damaged, with the eyes and metasoma missing.

All specimens of C. ferruginea found at MNHP were collected before the description of the species and none of them in Brazil.
