Bidens scandens Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 833. 1753.

"Habitat in Vera Cruce." RCN: 6027.

Lectotype (Blake in J. Bot. 53: 197. 1915; Moore in Fawcett & Rendle, Fl. Jamaica 7: 241. 1936): Herb. Clifford: 399, Bidens 5 (BM-000646991) .

Current name: Salmea scandens (L.) DC. ( Asteraceae).

Note: Blake (in J. Bot. 53: 197. 1915) referred to Houstoun material from Vera Cruz "in hb. Brit. Mus." as “Linnaeus’s types". There is a sheet of wild-collected material from Houstoun annotated by Blake, as well as material in the Clifford herbarium also identified as having originated with Houstoun. Although the latter may have been cultivated, Blake is accepted as having typified the name, with Moore having restricted the choice to the Clifford material.
