Bauhinia aculeata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 374. 1753.
"Habitat in America calidiore." RCN: 2948.
Lectotype (Stearn, Introd. Linnaeus’ Sp. Pl. (Ray Soc. ed.): 47. 1957): [icon] " Bauhinia caule aculeato" in Linnaeus, Hort. Cliff.: 156, t. 14. 1738. - Voucher: Herb. Clifford: 156, Bauhinia 1 (BM) .
Current name: Bauhinia aculeata L. ( Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae).
Note: This was treated as the generitype of Bauhinia by Britton & Wilson (Bot. Porto Rico Virgin Is. 5: 362. 1924) (see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 362. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Hitchcock’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 152. 1929) of B. divaricata L.
Wunderlin (in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 63: 47. 1976) indicated Clifford material as type but this choice is pre-dated by that of Stearn.
