Asplenium rhizophyllum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1078. 1753.

"Habitat in Jamaica, Virginia, Canada, Sibiria." RCN: 7827.

Lectotype (designated here by Reveal): Kalm, Herb. Linn. No. 1250.1 (LINN; iso- BM) .

Current name: Asplenium rhizophyllum L. ( Aspleniaceae).

Note: Maxon (in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 10: 482-484. 1908) discussed the original material and concluded that the name should apply to the element from Virginia. While noting the existence of Kalm material (1250.1 LINN), he did not refer to it as the type. Ewan (in Amer. Fern. J. 53: 141. 1963) noted that a Banister description and drawing contributed to Linnaeus’ knowledge of this taxon (and reproduced the original drawing and Plukenet’s copy, as his pl. 10).
