Agrostis stolonifera Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 62. 1753.
"Habitat in Europa." RCN: 539.
Lectotype ( Widén, Fl. Fennica 5: 77, f. 28. 1971): Herb. A. van Royen No. 912.356-55 (L) .
Current name: Agrostis stolonifera L. ( Poaceae).
Note: Hitchcock (in Bot. Gaz. 38: 141. 1904; U.S.D.A. Bur. Pl. Ind. Bull. 68: 24. 1905) treated 84.20 (LINN) as the type but the sheet lacks a Species Plantarum number (i.e. “7”), was a post-1753 addition to the herbarium and is not original material for the name. Philipson (in J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 51: 95. 1937) rejected the material from consideration while Breistroffer (in Bull. Soc. Bot. France, 1963 (89th Sess. Extr.): 57. 1966) said the name should be treated as a nomen ambiguum. Widén (Fl. Fennica 5: 508. 1967) rejected Hitchcock’s type choice in favour of van Royen material which he designated as lectotype. There is further discussion by Kurchenko (in Bot. Zhurn. 87(5): 115-119. 2002).
