Aspalathus argentea Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 713. 1753.
"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 5239.
Neotype (Dahlgren in Opera Bot. 4: 285. 1960): Tulbagh 150, Herb. Linn. No. 893.46 (LINN) .
Current name: Aspalathus argentea L. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).
Note: Dahlgren (in Opera Bot. 4: 285. 1960) discussed elements apparently associated with the name and, aware that a number of taxa were involved, designated Tulbagh material (LINN) as a neotype, and applied the name in that sense. However, he subsequently had second thoughts (Opera Bot. 9(1): 7. 1963; in Leistner, Fl. Southern Africa 16(3:6): 51. 1988) and rejected it as a nomen obscurum et (vel) ambiguum. Noting that it included elements belonging to A. sericea P.J. Bergius, A. altissima R. Dahlgren and A. caledonensis R. Dahlgren, he took up the latter name in its place, and this seems to have been followed by later authors. Dahlgren’s original typification, however, appears sound, and no rejection proposal has been made for A. argentea .
