Type locality. Not stated.

Material examined. None. Only the name label 'cynosbatella'.

Identity. Notocelia cynosbatella (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Olethreutinae, Eucosmini).

Remarks. As is the case with many combinations for the Linnean name cynosbatella, the Fabrician name appears in the literature with many confused identities (see especially Haworth 1811; Hübner 1825; Lederer 1859; Duponchel 1835). Most of the taxa associated with this name are supposed synonyms of species presently assigned to Notocelia, Spilonota, and Hedya, presumably due to their superficial similarity. It is clear, however, that the Fabricius name is merely an unjustified emendation of Phalaena cynosbatella Linnaeus, and it has been treated as such in contemporary literature (e.g., Brown 2005).
