nigricana Fabricius, 1794

Pyralis nigricana Fabricius, 1794: 276 .

Type locality. England (“Habitat in Anglia Dom. Francillon”).

Material examined. S & TL coll. 1 specimen (of Dichrorampha sp.).

Identity. Cydia nigricana (Fabricius) ( Olethreutinae, Grapholitini).

Remarks. The ‘pea moth’ is an economical important species, especially in North America where it was introduced. The name Cydia nigricana (or Laspeyresia nigricana) has been used for more than a century. However, Robinson and Nielsen (1983) discovered that Pyralis nigricana is a junior synonym of Phalaena rusticella Clerck, 1759 . Seymour (1986) proposed the conservation of the Fabrician name, and that proposal was accepted by the ICZN (1989: Opinion 1528).
