marmorana Fabricius, 1798

Pyralis marmorana Fabricius, 1798: 477 .

Type locality. Germany, Halle (“Habitat Halae Saxonum Dom. Hybner”).

Material examined. None.

Identity. Ancylis achatana (Denis and Schiffermüller, 1775) ( Olethreutinae, Enarmoniini) new synonym.

Remarks. Fabricius based his description of Pyralis marmorana on material from Hübner, which suggests that P. marmorana F. and Tortrix marmorana Hübner, 1799 could be synonyms. Because T. marmorana Hb. has long been considered a synonym of Ancylis achatana (D. and S.) (Frölich 1828; Lederer 1859), we may conclude that this is also the identity of Fabricius’ name. However, treatment of this name is not consistent in the literature. Werneburg (1864) proposed that the name is a synonymy of Eucosma hohenwarthiana sensu Humphreys and Westwood (=Treitschke, 1830), which may correspond to Zeiraphera isertana or Eucosma cana . The latter concept, followed by Obraztsov (1968), also has been followed by most contemporary authors (e.g., Brown 2005).
