Type Locality: "Cochin-China" (Indochina).

Vernacular Names: Stump-tailed Macaque.

Synonyms: Macaca brunneus (Anderson 1871); Macaca harmandi (Trouessart 1897); Macaca melanotus (Ogilby 1839); Macaca melli (Matschie 1912); Macaca rufescens (Anderson 1872); Macaca speciosus (Murie 1875); Macaca ursinus (Gervais 1854) .

Distribution: Assam (India) to S China and N Malay Peninsula.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; U.S. ESA – Threatened; IUCN – Vulnerable.

Discussion: M. fascicularis species group according to Groves (2001 c), but probably derived from an early Pleistocene hybridization between M. fascicularis, which it resembles in its mtDNA, and M. assamensis / thibetana, which it resembles in its Y chromosome. Reviewed by Fooden et al. (1985).
