Synonyms: Papio aegyptiaca (Gray 1870); Papio arabicus Thomas 1900; Papio brockmani Elliot 1909; Papio chaeropitheus (Lesson 1840); Papio cynamolgus (Linnaeus 1758); Papio nedjo (Reichenbach 1863); Papio wagleri (Agassiz 1828) .
Distribution: Arid zone of Red Sea coast of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, N Somalia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: Includes anubis, cynocephalus, papio, and ursinus according to Szalay and Delson (1979:336), but see Jolly and Brett (1973:85), Dandelot (1974:9), Corbet and Hill (1980:88), Groves (2001 c) and others who recognized these as distinct species.
