Type Locality: Madagascar.
Vernacular Names: Brown Lemur.
Synonyms: Eulemur bruneus (van der Hoeven 1844); Eulemur mayottensis (Schlegel 1866) .
Distribution: W Madagascar from Akarafantsika north to the Sambirano, perhaps to the Tsaratanana; E Madagascar, some way northeast of Antananarivo; Mayotte (Comoro Isls).
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: Does not include albifrons, albocollaris, collaris, rufus or sanfordi; Groves (2001 c) treated these forms, generally classed as subspecies, as distinct species.
