Psychoda buxoides Quate

Psychoda buxoides Quate, 1996: 71 —Original description.

Psychoda (Psychodocha) buxoides Quate: Bravo et al. 2006 —Geographic distribution; Cordeiro et al. 2011 —Redescription and new records.

Type locality. Costa Rica, Guanacaste, La Pacifica . Distribution. Costa Rica, Brazil: Amazonas, Pará, Mato Grosso e Fernando de Noronha .

Remarks. As Cordeiro et al. (2011) observed for Brazilian specimens from Amazonas, Pará, and Mato Grosso, the distance from the ocular bridge of the collected specimens also varies up to two times the diameter of a facet. Unlike the descriptions by Quate (1996) and Cordeiro et al. (2011), specimens of P. buxoides have labella with up to five “teeth”—apical spiniform setulae. Some specimens may have both labella with five “teeth” or one with five and the other with three to four “teeth.” Another feature observed is that the Sc vein is slightly arched, a character not highlighted in the literature, although illustrated in figure 5 by Cordeiro et al. (2011). Regarding the terminalia, some female specimens showed subtle variations in the subgenital plate, with a rounded concavity, portrayed in the literature as subquadrate (fig. 28a: Quate 1996; fig. 7: Cordeiro et al. 2011). In male specimens, the terminalia bears up to 12 setae in the basal protrusion of the gonocoxites.
