Type Locality: France, "Les montagnes pres de Tarbes (Hautes-Pyrenees)".

Distribution: Streams of the Pyrenees and the northern and central mountains of the Iberian Peninsula (France, Andorra, Spain and Portugal).

Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.

Discussion: Includes rufulus as a possible subspecies; reviewed by Palmeirim and Hoffmann (1983, Mammalian Species No. 207) and Juckwer (1990). Karyotype has 2n = 42, FN = 68 (Peyre, 1957).
