Solidago rigida Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 880. 1753.

"Habitat in Pensylvania." RCN: 6358.

Lectotype (Taylor & Taylor in Sida 10: 239. 1984): Herb. Linn. No. 998.20 (LINN) .

Current name: Solidago rigida L. subsp. rigida ( Asteraceae).

Note: Although Gray (in Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts 17: 179. 1882) noted the identity of 998.20 (LINN), and the cited Hermann figure, he did not designate a type. Mackenzie (in Rhodora 28: 29-31. 1926; 29: 30-31. 1927) also noted the existence of the LINN material but argued that it played no part in establishing the name, which he regarded as based on the Hermann plate t. 243 (representing S. patula Muhl.). Weatherby (in Rhodora 28: 138. 1926) disagreed strongly with him, and also over the identity of the plate. Taylor & Taylor appear to have been the first to make a formal type choice.
