Saccharum officinarum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 54. 1753.

"Habitat in Indiae utriusque locis inundatis." RCN: 453.

Lectotype (Reveal & al. in Taxon 38: 96. 1989): [icon] " Arundo saccharifera C. B. " in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica 1: 108, t. 66. 1707. - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 2: 14 (BM-SL) .

Generitype of Saccharum Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 119. 1929).

Current name: Saccharum officinarum L. ( Poaceae).

Note: As has been noted by Barrie & al. (in Taxon 41: 511. 1992), the typification made by Reveal & al. is pre-dated by the competing choice of Sherif & Siddiqi (in El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 145: 328. 1988), who chose 77.2 (LINN), a specimen of Miscanthus floridulus (Labill.) Warb, ex Schum. & Lander. It appears that a conservation proposal may be necessary but in the meantime, Art. 57.1 applies, and no change in the application of the name should occur.
