Salvia serotina Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 12, 2: 65; Mantissa Plantarum: 25. 1767.

"Habitat in Chio? Arduini." RCN: 188.

Lectotype (Hedge in Jarvis & al. in Taxon 50: 519. 2001): Herb. Linn. No. 42.9 (LINN) .

Current name: Salvia serotina L. ( Lamiaceae).

Note: Epling (in J. Bot. 67: 5. 1929) treated 42.9 (LINN) as "the probable historical type" but he later (in Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. Beih. 110: 77. 1939) concluded that the name had been based on material originally sent to Linnaeus by Arduino but subsequently lost, and discounted 42.9 (LINN) as type. Howard (in Fl. Lesser Antilles 6: 262. 1989) indicated de Jussieu material (P 5253) as type but this would necessarily be a neotype, which cannot be accepted in the presence of original material (42.9 LINN; Arduino’s cited t. 2, 1759) for the name. The extant specimen was therefore chosen as the lectotype by Hedge.
