Salsola sativa Linnaeus, Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 1: 323. 1762.

"Habitat in Hispaniae australis maritimis." RCN: 1823.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 315.9 (LINN); Herb. Linn. No. 315.32? (LINN); Herb. Linn. No. 315.18? (LINN) .

Current name: Halogeton sativus (L.) Moq. ( Chenopodiaceae).

Note: Blackwell & al. (in Sida 8: 161. 1979) referred to a specimen in LINN as the "type specimen" but did not distinguish between sheets 315.9, 315.18 and 315.32 (which are not part of a single gathering so Art. 9.15 does not apply). Castroviejo & al. (in Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 43: 477. 1987) discussed these specimens in some detail and concluded that S. sativa was a new species based in part on S. souda Loefl. (1758), which Linnaeus cited in the protologue of S. sativa . Castroviejo & al. argue that S. souda is merely an orthographic variant of S. soda L. (1753) but that in 1762, Linnaeus recognised that Löfling’s plant was distinct from S. soda and gave it the name S. sativa . In the absence of Löfling 123, they typified the name using Löfling’s description, though this is now contrary to Art. 9, a type being either a specimen or an illustration.
