Salvia clandestina Linnaeus, Species Plantarum, ed. 2, 1: 36. 1762.
"Habitat in Italia." RCN: 200.
Lectotype (Del Carratore & al. in Pl. Biosystems 132: 174, f. 4. 1998): [icon] " Horminum syl. inciso folio, caesio flore, Ital. " in Barrelier, Pl. Galliam: 24, t. 220. 1714.
Current name: Salvia clandestina L. ( Lamiaceae).
Note: Codd (in Leistner, Fl. Southern Africa 28(4): 97. 1985) indicated material at LINN (conceivably only 42.23) as holotype. However, this material conflicts with the protologue in several ways and also is identifiable as S. lanigera Poiret. Del Carratore & al. therefore rejected this type choice in favour of the Barrelier plate. They also recognise S. clandestina as a species distinct from S. verbenaca L., in contrast to many other authors.
