Schoenus nigricans Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 43. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae paludibus aestate, exsiccatis." RCN: 362.

Lectotype (Simpson in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 86. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 68.5 (LINN) .

Generitype of Schoenus Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock in Amer. J. Bot. 10: 514. 1923).

Current name: Schoenus nigricans L. ( Cyperaceae).

Note: Stearn (in Biol. J. Linn. Soc. 5: 12. 1973), in an account of Linnaeus’ Öland and Gotland journey of 1741, treated Gamelgarn in Gotland as the restricted type locality, and noted the existence of 68.6 (LINN), annotated by Linnaeus as from Gotland. In his paper, he attributed restricted type localities irrespective of whether any material existed in LINN and, where specimens do exist, he does not refer to any of them as type specimens. Simpson’s subsequent formal typification is accepted here.
