Solidago caesia Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 879. 1753.

"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 6352.

Lectotype (Uttal in Sida 10: 324. 1984): [icon] "Virga aurea Marilandica, caesia glabra" in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 2: 414, t. 307, f. 395. 1732. - Typotype: Herb. Dillenius No. 1848 (OXF) .

Current name: Solidago caesia L. var. caesia ( Asteraceae).

Note: Gray (in Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts 17: 178. 1882), in a study of the Solidago material in the Linnaean herbarium, believed there to be no relevant specimens of S. caesia, concluding that the name is "founded on" the cited Dillenian illustration and associated material in OXF. Taylor & Taylor (in Sida 10: 228. 1984) indicated both this plate and 998.14 (LINN) as “type”, and Uttal (in Sida 10: 324. 1984) appears to have been the first to formalise a choice. Reveal & al. (in Huntia 7: 238. 1987) provide a concise summary.
