Sparganium erectum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 971. 1753.
"Habitat in Zonae frigidae septentrionalis aquosis." RCN: 7047.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 1095.3 (LINN); Herb. Clifford: 439, Sparganium 1 α, 2 sheets (BM) ; Herb. Linn. No. 345 (LAPP); [icon] in Dodoëns, Stirp. Hist. Pempt., ed. 2: 601. 1616.
Generitype of Sparganium Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 187. 1929).
Current name: Sparganium erectum L. ( Sparganiaceae).
Note: Although some authors (e.g. Hylander in Uppsala Univ. Årsskr . 7: 64. 1945) have rejected the name as a nomen ambiguum, others have continued to use it. Cook (in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 107: 271. 1985) and Cook & Nicholls (in Bot. Helvetica 97: 19. 1987) accepted as type a Lobel plate that was not cited in the protologue and so cannot be an original element. At least some of the original material in the LINN and Clifford herbaria is identifiable as S. emersum Rehmann, although other possibilities for lectotypification may exist.
