Solidago canadensis Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 878. 1753.

"Habitat in Virginia, Canada." RCN: 6347.

Lectotype (Reveal & al. in Huntia 7: 238. 1987): Herb. Linn. No. 998.2 (LINN) .

Current name: Solidago canadensis L. var. canadensis ( Asteraceae).

Note: Gray (in Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts 17: 177. 1882), in a study of the Solidago material in the Linnaean herbarium, noted the existence of two sheets, one of which (998.2 LINN) was identifiable as S. canadensis, and the other (998.3 LINN) as S. rugosa Mill. Gray added that the cited Plukenet element should be excluded from the species (a view with which Mackenzie (in Rhodora 29: 74. 1927) disagreed) but did not explicitly indicate a type. Taylor & Taylor (in Sida 10: 230. 1984) indicated unspecified material in LINN as type (i.e. not distinguishing between 998.2 and 998.3), and Reveal & al. (in Huntia 7: 238. 1987) followed Gray’s conclusion and formally designated 998.2 (LINN) as lectotype.
