Scutellaria hyssopifolia Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 599. 1753.
"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 4356.
Lectotype (Epling in Univ. Calif. Publ. Bot. 20: 90. 1942): Clayton 261 (BM-000038156).
Current name: Scutellaria hyssopifolia L. ( Lamiaceae).
Note: Although Epling (in J. Bot. 67: 11. 1929) treated Kalm material (751.12 LINN) as the standard specimen, this is not equivalent to a type statement (see Jarvis & al. in Taxon 50: 508. 2001). Epling subsequently designated a Clayton collection as the type. Reveal (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 92: 172-175. 1986) and Reveal & al. (in Huntia 7: 216. 1987) provide a detailed review but claim that the name was first typified by Smith (in Rees’ Cyclop.: unpaged. 1815). However, Smith’s statements appear to fall short of formal, modern typification and Epling’s choice is accepted here.
